Win 7 Pro x64 machine on a company domain network does not have the ability to add a USB printer for some reason. All other computers do.

Hp compaq dc5100 sff audio drivers windows xp. In the Add Local Printer section, there's no USB001 (Virtual Printer Port for USB) option.

I tried doing several Google searches, found a few tricks, but nothing seems to work. I created a local port, labeled it USB001 and installed the driver, but the printer does not print anything.

Any ideas?

Feb 11, 2013  USB001 Virtual printer port / driver A client wants to use a USB port on their router as a USB printer server. The printer is an older HP but it is on the list of supported devices. Mar 02, 2010  The problem seemed to be based in the fact that although the printer drivers would load, Windows 7 would not recognise the Epson as a printer and therefore would not allocate USB001 as the default port.

That port is only created when you install a USB printer. It's not there by default. Follow the manufacturers instructions for your printer installation.

For me, I had to uninstall the USB to Serial drivers that I installed.

After searching for a while, I found no real answer. And it's not really answered here yet. So I decided to try something.

Even though my printer installation instructions say NOT to plug it in before installation, I decided to anyway.
My reasoning was that USB always seems to use pnp and install drivers the first time you use a device.
I don't remember ever using a USB to parallel cable, so I guessed that's why a USB local port didn't appear in the list.

Viola - It worked! And I am connecting an OLD Brother IntelliFax 4100. And now the USB port appears in the drop down.

Most modern inkjet and laser printers are equipped with a built-in USB port for connecting to a PC quickly and with minimal effort. If your small business is like many others, you probably have two or more printers connected to a single PC, which you use for different printing tasks. When connecting multiple USB printers to a computer, you might use a USB hub to accommodate the need for multiple ports. Unless all of the printers you want to connect are identical, each one requires its own driver and virtual USB port. When using multiple USB printers with a hub, Windows XP might not always assign a unique port when the operating system starts, or USB-port errors may be reported. Therefore, you must ensure that a sufficient number of virtual USB ports exist in Windows Device Manager so you can use all of your printers without having to restart Windows or reinstall a print driver each time you print to a different device.

1.

Power off the computer and disconnect all USB printers from the machine. If you have a USB hub, disconnect it as well.

2.

Restart the computer and log in to Windows. Click “Start,” and then right-click “My Computer” on the Start menu. On the pop-up menu, click the “Manage” option.

3.

Click “Device Manager” in the right-hand pane of the Computer Management window. Double-click the “Ports (COM & LPT)” link. Highlight the first virtual USB port in the list (usually USB0001 or something similar). Right-click the highlighted virtual USB port value and click “Uninstall.” Do the same for any other virtual USB ports in the list. Restart the computer.

4.

Click “Start,” then “Control Panel.” In the Control Panel window, click the “Programs and Features” option.

5.

Scroll down through the list of installed programs until you come to the printer utility and driver software for one of your printers. Highlight the application name and click the “Uninstall” button near the top of the window. Follow the prompts to uninstall the application and driver from your computer. Do the same for any other printer utility applications installed on your computer.

6.

Launch your Web browser and navigate to the product support website of the manufacturer of the first printer you want to connect to the computer. Download the latest utility and driver installation file for that printer and save it to your computer. Download drivers for any other printers you want to connect to the PC.

7.

Click “Start,” then “My Computer.” Browse to the folder where you saved the installation file for the first printer. Double-click the file name, and then follow the on-screen directions to reinstall the printer software and driver on your PC. When prompted to do so by the installation wizard, reconnect the USB cable for the printer to an open USB port on the computer. Do not connect the printer before the wizard prompts you or connect the printer to a USB hub. After connecting the printer to the computer, continue following the prompts in the wizard to complete the installation of the first printer.

8.

Install the software driver and utility application for the second printer. Leave the first printer connected to the computer while you install the driver software for the second one. Again, do not connect the second printer to the computer until prompted to do so. Install additional printers as needed, ensuring that you do not disconnect other printers while doing so. Connect each printer to a separate USB port and not a USB hub.

9.

Power off the computer after you finish installing all of the printers you want to connect to the PC. Disconnect all of the USB cables leading from the printers to the computers. Connect the USB hub to a port on the rear of the PC. Do not use a front-panel USB port for the hub because it might not receive adequate current to power all of the virtual USB ports needed for multiple printers.

10.

Restart the computer after plugging the USB hub into a rear port on the PC. Do not reconnect the printers at this time. Wait a few seconds for Windows XP to detect and configure the USB hub for use.

Connect the first printer to the USB hub and wait a few seconds for Windows XP to recognize and reinitialize its driver. After Windows XP confirms the successful installation of the first printer, connect additional printers to the hub one at a time in the same manner.

Things Needed

  • USB cables
  • Print drivers for all connected printers

Tip

  • When using multiple USB printers with Windows, it is always best to connect each one to its own USB port rather than using a hub. Using the above method, though, should reset the list of virtual ports in Windows XP and allow you to use them with a hub so you can free up ports for other devices. If you must use a hub, though, connect it to a USB port on the rear of the computer. Power supplied by ports connected directly to the motherboard is much more stable than current produced by front-panel USB ports.
