Also, you might serious consider using MSE. If you're running XP Professional SP2, it would help to upgrade to SP3, otherwise, why even bother using anti-virus? You're system is vulnerable enough being out of date.
Kapersky's Support Page says:
- Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition (Service Pack 2 and above)
- Microsoft Windows XP Professional (Service Pack 2 and above)
- Microsoft Windows XP Professional x64 Edition (Service Pack 2 and above)
- Intel Pentium 800 MHz 32-bit (x86)/64-bit (x64) or above (or compatible) 512 MB available RAM
So what's your computer set up like? Try upgrading it.
Or, get a different antivirus.
Did you remove any previous installations of AV software first?
This could be a sign of an infected PC also.
Make a boot AV disc then Boot from the disc and scan the hard drive, remove any infections it finds, I prefer the Kaspersky disc.
Then:Install free MBAM, run the program and go to the Update tab and update it, then go to the Scanner Tab and do a quick scan, select and remove anything it finds.
When MBAM is done install SAS free version, run a quick scan, remove what it automatically selects.http://www.superantispyware.com/download.html

You can only install one real-time AV product; so you’re obviously better off if you pick one with a good protection rating – like the ones suggested above by Bruce Hagen. But you shouldn’t stop there if you’re using your XP computer for surfing, because the odds are going to be stacked against you in a big way. To stay safe, you’ll need to double-check frequently by scanning with some of the on-demand malware-removal tools suggested by quietman7 MS MVP here:
Supplementing your Anti-Virus Program with Anti-Malware Tools.
On my XP machine, I use Avast Free for the primary protection, and then back that up with the free version of HitmanPro (not activated) and HitmanPro.Alert (with CryptoGuard). I also do periodic scans with Malwarebytes, SuperAntiSpyware, and Kaspersky Security Scan – and I still back up all of my personal files religiously; because with a zero-day threat, everything else can fail.

[EDIT]
Looking around a little, I see that quite a few free AVs (for Windows XP) now tend to get better reviews than Avast, including these:
